CD Review - fRoots Magazine, London England, April 2009
"Here is an album that comes as a very pleasant surprise. Dave's traditional material is taken mainly from upstate New York and covers the localised songs of its canals and lumber camps as well as wider known items such as Bald Headed End Of The Broom and Our Goodman. The mixture of thoughtful and humorous songs is interspersed with some sprightly instrumentals on banjo, mandolins and guitar.
The booklet tells us very little about him, beyond 'I worked very hard for years to avoid making this CD' whereas we learn a great deal about the traditional singers and musicians that he learned the songs from. Perhaps the booklet does tell a lot about the man after all. He seems to be an enthusiast; a man who is driven by his love of his material rather than his love of performing. With performers of traditional songs, this sort usually make the best sort of performers and this seems to be the case here.
A picture on his website shows him performing on stage sitting next to an unnamed Jeff Warner. Funnily enough it was to him and that other Jeff - Davis - that these performances bear many comparisons." - Vic Smith
